What’s Next for DEI in Nonprofits? Maybe Something More Human

I recently came across an article by Seth Chalmer titled “As Nonprofits Face the DEI Wars, Can a ‘Prohuman’ Approach Help?” and it made me pause. Like many in the nonprofit world, I’ve seen how DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) has shaped our work, and how it’s now facing backlash, confusion, and fatigue.

Chalmer introduces something called the Prohuman Approach, focused on curiosity, compassion, and shared humanity. The story of Daryl Davis, a Black man who formed relationships with KKK members and helped some leave the group, is central to this idea. It’s powerful and a reminder that change often starts with listening, not confrontation.

But here’s my hesitation. DEI exists for a reason. It gave us the tools to name and challenge real inequities. Replacing it with something more comfortable to talk about risks is watering down that purpose. That said, I do think the Prohuman mindset offers something useful: space for honest dialogue, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building. We need that too.

Maybe the answer isn’t to choose one or the other. We can keep pushing for equity and systems change while also creating a culture that values connection and understanding.

Progress doesn’t require perfection. It requires showing up, listening, and not backing away when things get uncomfortable.
