Hello everyone! My name is Elsa Tamayo, a current CSUMB student and intern at Nonprofit Connection. In this member spotlight I am excited to share an update about the new CEO of United Way of Santa Cruz County, Yvette Brooks! This is a new chapter for the organization, as Brooks brings a wealth of experience in community leadership, a strong strategic vision, and a deep passion for creating meaningful change.
Brooks served two terms on the Capitola City Council, including two stints as mayor. With over 15 years at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, Brooks has been a strong advocate for ensuring all students have access to education and resources. For the past three years, she has led Your Future Is Our Business as its executive director.
United Way of Santa Cruz County is a well-known nonprofit dedicated to supporting education, health, and financial stability, with a strong focus on youth. As a city councilmember, Brooks was a passionate advocate for improving kids’ lives—championing a tax-funded children’s fund and playing a key role in fundraising for an accessible playground at Jade Street Park. She carried that dedication into her career.
Brooke states, “I feel as if every single moment has masterfully led me to where I am today. Public service has been at the heart of my life’s work, and while I never could have imagined the honor of serving as CEO of United Way Santa Cruz County, I have always known that a commitment to youth opportunity, health, community resilience, and inclusion is both meaningful and rewarding…
As we celebrate Women’s Empowerment Month, I recognize that I could not have reached this moment without the support of incredible leaders like Rose Filicetti, founder of Nonprofit Connection. Her dedication to strengthening our nonprofit community has paved the way for so many of us to lead with purpose and impact. I am grateful for the mentors and trailblazers who have uplifted me, and I look forward to continuing the work of building a more equitable and thriving Santa Cruz County for all.”
