Recognizing Hispanic | Latino Heritages

September 15, 2026 - October 15, 2026

Our country recognizes the legacy and contributions of more than 60 million Hispanic Americans, Latinos, Latinas, and Latinx-identifying people, by celebrating the histories and cultures of American citizens (and non-citizens) whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. (Personally, I honor the wonderful Latino/a leaders in our community, the arts and culture, and the food!)

A note about terminology: Historically, this month was referred to as Hispanic Heritage Month. There is currently a rich dialogue about terminology used to signify Latinx identity. “Hispanic” is an older term associated with those who are from Spanish-speaking countries, but is often associated with colonialism. Most countries in Latin America originally had their own indigenous languages and were forced to learn Spanish through colonization. The term “Latinx” has growing acceptance for people of Latin American descent since it is inclusive of those with non-binary and gender-neutral identities. Some prefer the term “Latine” because there is a gender neutral “e” at the end, which is native to the Spanish language!  NPC will continue to listen to and incorporate the feedback of Latinx folk on our team and in the larger community.

NPC honors Latinx Heritage Month by uplifting local Latinx-led

and Latinx-serving NPC member organizations!
