Hello everyone. My name is Elsa Tamayo, CSUMB student and current intern for Nonprofit Connection Santa Cruz County. In this blog post, I am thrilled to share some fantastic news from Save Our Shores! The organization has officially welcomed Katie Thompson as its new Executive Director.

Katie’s journey began in the Midwest, where she spent her childhood by rivers and lakes. Despite this, her true passion has always been for the ocean. This love inspired her to study biology at Oberlin College, followed by a Master’s in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington. With a decade of experience in marine conservation, Katie has developed a strong expertise in community-based conservation strategies and nonprofit management.

Katie was interviewed by (NPC Member) KSQD Community Radio’s Rachel Goodman, where she talked about her interests and passion for protecting the coastline, climate change affecting marine life and migration patterns, and the need for cross-boundary collaboration. Katie talks about the importance of beach clean-ups, advocating for the ban of filtered cigarette products in the county of Santa Cruz County, and decreasing the amount of litter on our local beaches.

Now, she’s excited to lead the dedicated team at Save Our Shores as they work towards creating a more resilient coastline for everyone. Katie’s vision and leadership will be invaluable as the organization continues its important mission to protect and restore marine ecosystems.

Please join NPC in welcoming Katie to the Save Our Shores family! It’s an exciting time for the organization, and we can’t wait to see the positive impact she will bring to our coastal communities. Stay tuned for more updates as Katie and the team embark on this important journey together!
