Santa Cruz Shakespeare and the Homeless Garden Project are thrilled to team up to present a one-night only reading of Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus. This hour-long reading will focus on the themes of homelessness and banishment. A community discussion will follow between the audience, actors, director, and members of the HGP.
Formerly King of Thebes, Oedipus blinded himself after discovering he had murdered his father and married his mother. In the wake of this, he left the city, never to return. His wanderings bring him to the village of Colonus, where he rests on a stone. When the villagers discover him, they demand that he leave their sacred ground…
Oedipus at Colonus will feature Mike Ryan, Charles Pasternak, Patty Gallagher, and HGP trainees as the Chorus; it will be directed by Carey Perloff, artistic director of American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco from 1992 to June 2018.
