Firecracker is back and in-person with a few changes.

The recent opening of California and the removal of many of the social distancing requirements that were put in place at the time we submitted out permit requests means that we now have an opportunity to open up the race.  We are removing the social distancing time slots that permitted 30 people every 10 minutes that was previously in place for this event.   We will now have two separate scenarios for a start and an open start for a longer period of time:

  1. We will do a group, chip-start, at 8:00 am on race day.  That way those of you who want to run together at the same time can do that.  Your start time will not actually be recorded until you cross the chip mats but you will be able to start in a larger group.
  2. The start line will remain open until our originally posted closing time of 11:00am to accommodate people who don’t want to start in the larger group, or who have work or family obligations earlier in the morning.
  3. You can show up and start anytime you want between 8:00am and 11:00am without having to select one of specified time slots.

Basically, we are now able to provide the best of both worlds – a group start for people who want to run together and a socially distanced start for those who don’t want to start with the larger group. But we do have a few changes for this year

  • We will only be doing a 5K event this year.  We’ll be back with the 10K and Kid’s 1K in 2022.
  • We will still maintain a 500 person limit for the 5K.
  • There is a slight adjustment in the 5k course to accommodate the long course opening and traffic management for the neighborhood, so be sure to check the 2021 course listed on the menu at the top of this page.
  • The finish line will be open until noon.
  • Once you’ve finished you will pick up your medal and shirt, as well as water and a snack and get to go home and have a shower while you wait for the results!  No loitering in big groups at the finish. Since the start is staying open for so long we won’t have final results until after everyone is finished.

We know it’s different.  We know it’s not optimal.  The silver lining is that you get to do a live race with official start and finish times! Each finisher gets a swag bag that will contain a dry-release running cap, a collapsible water bottle, finisher medal and a post-race snack in their bag.

We also want to thank everyone for their support and patience as things have been changing daily in our efforts to put this race together this year.
