A Community Conversation on Climate Change: Action and Hope

March 16, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Cabrillo College, Horticultural Center, Koppes Community Room Free

On Thursday March 16, the Democratic Women’s Club will host “A Community Conversation on Climate Change: Action & Hope” at the Cabrillo College Horticulture Building.  Hear from local climate leaders working on sustainable agriculture, coastal resilience, land protection and carbon sequestration, citizen science, and actions you and your family can take now to cut emissions, save money and prepare for climate change. Find out how you can turn your concern and fear about climate change into action and hope for all of us.

Come and enjoy our resource fair with food and local non-profit agencies from 5-6pm. Over 15 local environmental groups and school programs will be joining us for a Resource Fair prior to the  speakers. They’ll feature their programs and projects, bring collateral material and educate us on opportunities for us—individuals, families, communities—to engage locally in civic engagement related to local climate change.

Program with speakers and panels is from 6-8pm.

Opening speaker: John Laird will report on the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) in Egypt, and climate-related State legislation.

John will be followed by 2 panels with speakers including: Gary Griggs, Sarah Newkirk, Sacha Lozano, Tiffany Wise West, Alex Yasbek, Felicia Van Stolk, Justin Cummings, and a student from the Cabrillo Environmental Program. Both panels will be facilitated by Donna Meyers, a former mayor of Santa Cruz whose 25+career has focused on water quality protection, coastal resource and watershed management, and coastal land restoration and protection.

Closing speaker: Bella Bonner, Founder of Black Surf Santa Cruz, Inc., speaking about personal and community responsibility and stewardship of our oceans and lands.

It’s going to be an informative and inspirational evening you won’t want to miss

Food: Sandwich (1/2 hearty sandwich per person) fruit, and cookies will be available at no charge. Please choose your preference with your ticket.
